Thoughts On Having An 11 Month Old

All is quiet... My daughter went down for a midday nap, and I am having some solitary quietness, for the moment, anyway. My little one is 11 months old today. I can hardly believe it. How on earth did this (almost a) year fly by so quickly?

I've been pretty sentimental lately. Blame it on the weaning(ish) hormones being all out of whack, or what not, but I've been pretty sappy. Last night, a friend of mine mentioned how Lily is almost a year old. All at once, a train wreck of memories of this past year flooded my thoughts with nostalgia. That little 8 pound stranger entered my life almost a year ago, and changed me forever. Nothing has been the same since. I cannot imagine life without her now.

It is funny how someone so little can be the one person who changes your heart. Having Lily taught me how to become raw; how to let go, and see myself for who I really am. This journey of being a mama is an ever evolving process; painful, bewildering, joyful, and so very fulfilling.

These past 11 months have been such an adventure. One I would not change for the world.

Lily is now walking, jabbering up a storm, and has a will of iron (just like her Mama). She is so loving. I'll be having such a hard day, and she will be crying like crazy to be picked up. As soon as I scoop her up in my arms, she will plant a huge wet kiss on my cheek... Baby kisses make everything better, I tell you. I've never met a child who loves animals as much as she does. If there is a cat or dog within a 50 foot radius, Lily is squealing and hyperventilating with excitement. Just last week, my mom was babysitting Lils and found her laying on top of the kitty, patting his furry back. She is the biggest flirt; grinning and making faces at strangers to get their attention. I've never have met anyone- baby or adult- who has such an expressioniate face. You always know what is on her mind by looking at her face. She doesn't hide how she feels. She loves to laugh. Often times she will "fake" laugh at Kyle and me, just to get us laughing, so she can laugh with us. She is still breastfeeding... She'll go days and act like she isn't interested, and I will be sure she is weaning herself... and then the next day, all she wants to do is breastfeed. She hates bananas and avacadoes with a passion. As much as I tried to keep her diet vegan, she LOVES yogurt and cheese (also, just like her mom). Every night before she goes to sleep, I sing Jon Mark McMillian's "How He Loves Us" to her, and she lays her head down on my shoulder, and snuggles up close to listen. She looks just like her daddy, and acts just like her mommy.

I love this little girl with all my heart.

The Road Rises Up To Meet Me

Thank you all for your amazing, sweet comments on yesterdays blog post. Each and every one of you are just so lovely. I'm so happy to know each of you, even if it is just through the blog-sphere.

Today, I have been reminded of God's faithfulness. With bills piling up, a car daily reminding me that it needs a tune up, and money tight- it is easy for me to loose my peace. But, I'm reminded that no matter what the circumstances of the day may bring, HE makes the road rise up to meet me. Not a hair on my head goes unaccounted for in His sight. All my worry amounts to nothing. The only thing that worry and anxiety does accomplish, is that it steals my joy of today. I am choosing joy.

In other news... I am excited to be unveiling a whole new re-vamped design of "She Breathes Deeply" in the next few weeks. This little blog has stretched and grown, and it's time for a new look to signify that. Also, I will be launching a "She Breathes Deeply" store, filled with prints (such as the one I made above) for purchase. I've been having so much fun, playing around with a couple prints, and I can't wait to introduce you to my shop.

On Not Being Good Enough

This is something that has been on my heart as of late, and I thought I would share...

I've been reading various mom blogs lately, finding a common thread that resonates in my own heart and mind, as well... There is this subject of not being "good enough."

I find myself fighting the temptation to tear down my parenting, my marriage, and even myself; scared to death I am not enough, not woman enough for the task.

Many of you know what I am talking about. The fears that keep you awake at night; telling you how your child(ren) will grow up to dislike you, and your parenting with have amounted to a hot mess of resentment, no matter how hard you tried. Fears that tell you that you aren't the wife you want to be. Fears that tell you everyone must judge you. Should I go on?

I'm beginning to see how we have all been at this place of fear in some way or another. We feel lacking; incomplete. Foreboding failure is what taunts us; seeming to await us each day. Fear that whispers, "Look at how everyone else has their act together... except you." Fear that says: "You are not good enough."

I had a thought a few weeks ago... What if all these fears were in fact a bunch of lies? What if I treated them as such; nothing but tall tales and untruths? How would that play into my every day life, if I daily refused to listen to the lies of not being good enough?

What if I woke up every morning and asked the Lord to see myself through His eyes? What if I refused to listen to the lies of not being good enough, and believed that I am human; frail and incomplete- yet through Jesus I am whole and more than enough?

What if I told myself, and truly believed that...

I am a wonderful mom. I am a wonderful wife.

I am complete and whole in Jesus.

And that, my friends is more than good enough. Am I perfect? No. Not even close. But, I love my family, I love my child... I would do anything, and sacrifice all of myself for them. And what they need more than anything is a woman who believes in the strength that Jesus died to give her... Believes in the power of loving another with out reservation. Believes that her beauty runs miles deeper than skin. Believes that she is whole in Jesus.

What would happen if you woke up tomorrow and believed this about yourself?

Alright, mama's. It is time. Break out the strollers, the sneakers, and the spandex (if you absolutely must), and let's start walking. I'm not making anymore excuses about not being able to work out with a little one. And I refuse to be lacking in energy because I don't get working out in. We are STRONG women, and STRONG mama's. So, let's get walking.

My goals for this challenge is to make sure I am spending at least 30 minutes a day outside, soaking up some vitamin D, and getting some cardio in. I want my daughter to see how her Mama is taking care of her health, by taking care of her body. I want to spend this time not only walking, but praying over my family, and spending time with the Lord while enjoying His creation around me.

The Mom Walk Challenge

Oh, the infamous "Mom Walk." What comes to mind when you hear the words, "Mom Walk?" I envision hi-tops, spandex, and chicken arms a'flappin'. Ha.

But, in all seriousness, I have found a whole new love for walking ever since I had my baby. I gained 32 pounds, respectively, through pregnancy. I've lost all but a couple pounds or so postpartum. I attribute this to several things; eating mostly healthy, breast feeding, staying active, and "mom walking." After having Lily, I found a whole new love for walking. This may be because walking is the only way I can fit in exercise while having a young child. I strap my baby in, and I start pounding the pavement.

Walking is one of my favorite ways to stay active. Often, I find myself pushing the stroller, daydreaming blog ideas, sorting thoughts, and praying. It is my kind of therapy. Not to mention, my daughter LOVES being outside, and often becomes so relaxed in the stroller that she falls asleep.

On one of my many "mom walks" one day, I had a thought: how much fun would it be to create an "mom walking group" on my blog?! So, several walks later, I had it all figured out.

From February 6th-March 5th I will be hosting a "Mom Walk Challenge." I am challenging all of you to break out the stroller, buckle the kiddo in, and walk. Log your miles, blog your miles, and you will be entered in a big giveaway at the end of the challenge. This is not an exercise program. Think of it more of an initiative to get out of the house, breathe in some fresh air, and get moving.

Here is how it will work:

Starting February 6th, every Monday for a month, we will start logging our mom walk miles. You can visit my blog on Monday's and link up with everyone participating. Migraines Are For The Birds

Migraines are for the birds.

(No, I take that back. I wouldn't wish a migraine on a little bird brain.) I'm propped up in bed, trying to find a good blog post in me... but all I can think about is a hot cup of tea, an ice pack on my neck, and maybe a hot shower.

I get terrible migraines due to the fact I have a pretty messed up spine. Thankfully, I am getting regular chiropractic treatment- which is a God-send. I've had a chiropractor jokingly ask if I have ever fallen off a building (like I said: I have a messed up spine).

I used to get migraines every single day, but since seeing a chiropractor they are fewer and farther between... But, today I have one... and it is a doozy.

Oh, well. Life goes on. So, I am going to go treat my mess of a smelly, un-showered, aching body to a hot shower, followed by a hot cup of tea, and an ice pack.

3. Cut a two-four inch strip off above where you cut the hem off (Depending on how thick you want it).

Sleeping In Is For Babies

Yawn. Sleeping in isn't quite what it used to be. Kyle and I always get a snarky little laugh out of what our definition of sleeping in was before baby, and now what it is after baby. I'm not much for using labels to describe our family, but we aren't much for co-sleeping with a 11 month old octopus between us these days.

Don't get me wrong- I LOVE (with a capital L) to snuggle up with my baby and take a nap. There is nothing better. In the early months of Lily's life, we did co-sleep often, just out of necessity more than anything. Lily wanted to breastfeed all night long, so it was either a.) be up all night, or b.) let baby sleep in our bed, so we all wouldn't go insane from the lack of sleep. This worked semi good for awhile, but as she got older, and the more mobile she became, it became more difficult. Finally, when Lily was 9 months old, we moved out of our 1 bedroom into a 2 bedroom, and moved baby into her own little nursery.

It made me a nervous wreck at first; having her sleeping in another room (I'm a tad over-protective. But that is an entirely different post in itself). But, in the end, she took to sleeping in her own room like a charm. Kyle and I felt like we had new life breathed into our marriage; being able to have time alone at night. We had no idea how rough it had been on us to not have time just the two of us; having to whisper, and cringe every time we ran into the dresser in fear of waking baby up.

So, all in all, making the move of having baby in her own bed has been successful and wonderful.

But, then there is the weekends... I love being a mother more than anything. I cherish my role as mama deeply. But, there are those Saturday mornings that I YEARN for a morning that I can sleep in as late as my weary body desires.

In a desperate attempt to gain at least a couple more hours of sleep, sometimes I still put Lily in between us on the weekend mornings, and let her nurse until she falls asleep. This has worked BEAUTIFULLY up until she learned how to walk. The past couple of weekends I have woken up pinned down by two little chubby hands on my shoulders, and a cute little face 3 inches from my own, peering at me in the dark saying something to the effect of, "Mama! Iggy ya-ya room sa pop pop yoosha!" This goes on for a couple minutes, until she stands up, bounces on the bed, falls over, claps her hands, and then moves over to Kyle to tell him some big story... "DAD! YA YA sue sha pop pop!" And then in a daring attempt to escape, our little jabberer climbs over one of us and tries to free fall right out of bed. Thankfully, one of us is stirred from our sleep quick enough to grab her chunky little legs before she plummets to the floor.

Whew. Sleeping in is a work out. I'm pretty sure it should become an Olympic event. Even so, I wouldn't trade waking up to that little rosy cheeked angel face and all her big stories for the world.

I hope you are all having a wonderful, sleep deprived as it may be, coffee filled Monday.

On Seasons Changing

I'm turning 26 years old in March. 26 is not old by any stretch of the imagination, but it does have a sense of settling in to age. All the big birthday's are over before 30. I can vote, drink wine, and rent a car. Now, I am looking down the barrel at 30 approaching... and surprisingly, I'm smiling.

I feel like I am settling into my age, watching as another line deepens my smile just a bit, and enjoying that I don't feel the pressure to be something I am not. I realized this the other day in Target of all places. Kyle and I walked quickly by the previous loved clothing section, and headed straight to the home decor section. Hmm... this must signify something, right? It used to be I would spend a good hour, grazing through all the clothes I could find. Don't get me wrong- I still love a cute outfit. But, Kyle and I had a good laugh talking about how we no longer need more than a few pairs of clothes (21 year old me would be shocked). We would much rather spend any extra money on making our apartment feel homey and nice.

When I get ready in the morning, I am noticing I don't put as much make up on. I'm more comfortable in my own skin. I like getting dressed up, but I feel cuter when I am dressed comfortable in my jeans, t-shirt, and TOMS. I don't kill myself to be a size 4 anymore. I eat when I am hungry, and I eat healthy for the most part. I am so happy that God has shown me how to love my body, and treat in in a health manner, rather than being on the never ending quest to be rail thin. Feeling good is so much better than how you look.

I'm not even sure where I am going with all of this. I just was feeling a tad introspective, and I thought I would share.

Hanging Upside Down

There are somethings in life that just scare me a little bit. Things like hanging upside down, for instance.
I attended a christian yoga class yesterday, and wouldn't you know? The class was on "flight." ("Flight" meaning jump throughs and handstands.) Now, I don't know about you, but I don't think I have done a handstand since I was ten years old. I'm on the tall side for a girl (5'8), so if I fall, I kind of have a long ways to go. Standing on my hands, upside down? Not exactly my cup of tea.

As I was hanging upside down in class, with sweat pouring off my forehead, I realized how much this parallels my spiritual life. I like to stand on my own two feet, so to speak. I feel like I must figure out everything on my own, or something will go wrong. The root of having to micro-manage every aspect of my life, is because of my fear of letting go; of allowing God to pry my greedy little fingers of false security open. In my mind, if I let go, my world will be turned upside down. If I am not in control; if I don't figure out/worry over/micro-manage every detail... something is bound to go wrong. In essence, I DO NOT like hanging upside down; physically OR spiritually.

Being upside down requires an immense amount of strength. Not only in your arms, but from your CORE. I will admit, my core is not as strong as I would like it to be. But, who's fault is that but my own? Do I spend the time that I should strengthening my core so I can become comfortable hanging upside down? No, not often. What about spiritually? Do I spend time with the Lord, daily at his feet, asking for HIS strength to be at my "core" to lead me, even if that means "hanging upside down" in life? Sadly, I am not sure I do.

So, I find myself with my head bowing lower, and my palms on the floor. Slowly, but surely, I am building my core; finding my strength. I'm walking my feet up the wall behind me- finding, and learning what it means to be hanging upside down... trusting Jesus at the core of who I am to keep me right side up, or upside down. Have I mastered my handstands? Nope. Not yet. But I am trying. I'm learning. I'm listening.

Clean and Green Week: EXFOLIATE!

Cleaning and Greening Week- Day Five!

My skin gets so dry in the winter. I hate feeling like I am walking around with an extra layer of dead, itchy skin. So, it is time for me to exfoliate. Here is a recipe I am going to be making for this weekend... (My husband is home on the weekends, so Saturday is my one long, luxurious shower day. All other days I am rushing through my shower at a break neck speed. I have a 10 month old. Need I say more?)

Mandy's "It's Been A Long Week Scrub."

-1/2 cup of brown sugar

-1/2 cup of sea salt

-2 spoonfuls of organic virgin coconut oil

-1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil

-4-6 drops of essential oil (I am going with Lavender)

Easy, peasy. And, boy do I love how my skin feels afterwards.

I mean, I DO come from the generation that says scrub, wash, blot, and wipe all that oil on your face away or you will break out. Who knew that putting oils on my skin would actually help me? And like I mentioned yesterday, once I found out about the down right NASTY junk that is in store bought facial scrubs/washes/astringents/etc I knew it was time to make a clean sweep and find something au natural.

The Oil Cleansing Method has been by far my favorite way to cleanse my skin. Here is what I use...

-Jojoba Oil

-Castor Oil

-Lavender essential oil

I use a 50/50 ratio of castor oil and jojoba oil (actually, recently I ran out of jojoba oil and have been using organic extra virgin olive oil... But I prefer jojoba oil). Then, I add a few drops of Lavender in the mix. Stir this all together in a container and... voila! I have my oil cleanse. (I store it in a glass jar that I keep next to my sink.) I wash my face for a couple minutes with this wonderful goodness, and then with a warm, wet washcloth I wipe until all the oil is removed. Afterwards, I directly apply a couple of drops of Lavender directly to my skin and leave it there (I do not wash this off.) To read about Lavender, click here.

Breast Feeding

Lily is approaching a year old at a very fast pace. She has been breast feeding all this time, but as she gets older, she is starting to slowly loose interest, at least during the daytime. This doesn't bother me much, because she has been such a great nurser for almost a year now. She still loves nothing better than to snuggle up and nurse right before bed, and as soon as she wakes up in the morning. In the beginning of breast feeding, I never would have thought I would say this, but I have treasured this year of breast feeding. Even if she weaned herself tomorrow, I feel happy with the route we took.

As her first birthday is only a few weeks away (goodness gracious), I have been considering what routes we will take as she is growing beyond wanting to nurse during the day. I am hoping she will continue to want to nurse in the morning, and right before bed into the next year. But if not, I am okay with that, as well. I am just watching her cues, and seeing what her needs are.

I have been thinking about all this, which of course has made me think about how hard it was for me in the beginning of breast feeding. I thought I would offer a little advice to pregnant or new moms considering breast feeding.

I'm going to be honest here... Breast feeding was TERRIBLE for me in the beginning. I bled, had mastitis, I was engorged, had a breast infection, had several plugged milk ducts over time... Oh, and my milk STILL comes in full force even after 10 months of nursing. If I forget to wear breast pads, and am late on feeding my baby... let's just say EVERYONE will be aware I am a breast feeding mom very quickly (can someone find me a dry shirt?!).

Honestly, I wasn't one of those moms who looked forward to breast feeding their baby. I dreaded it. First, I thought it was kind of strange to have a little 8 pound milk monster chomping on my boob. Second, it hurt like heck. Third, I thought I had lost any shred of independence after experiencing a couple cluster feedings.

I don't say this to scare you. I say this to encourage you that it DOES get better! I wanted to give up so badly. But, I didn't and now- I am so glad I didn't.

Some mothers (I have heard) have no problem, or very little problems at all breast feeding. I was NOT one of those women. It took several weeks for me to become comfortable with nursing. Now, it is just second nature to me.

So, if you are struggling with breast feeding, here are some thoughts that helped me.

1. TAKE A BREAST FEEDING CLASS!

My ob/gyn told my several times I needed to go to a breast feeding class. I politely made excuses over and over. I mean didn't he know I was going to be a natural at this? Really. How hard could attaching a baby to your boob be? LISTEN LADIES! Breast feeding is SO much more than just holding a baby up to your boob, and hoping for the best. These classes are here for a reason! Breast feeding is, dare I say, an art, and you WILL have to practice. The more you know, the better off you are.

2. Load up breast feeding essentials, but don't go overboard.

Breast pads are a must. That or you may put yourself in danger of being called "Bessie" and publicly likened to a milking cow. With all those fresh, new, out of whack post partum hormones, you DON'T want to anyone likening you to a cow. Trust me.

Other than breast pads, buy yourself a couple breast feeding bras, and maybe a couple breast feeding tanks. I say a couple because you do not need a whole new wardrobe of breast feeding accessories. In the beginning, it is very useful, and much more comfortable to wearing nursing tanks. But, as you get in the swing of whipping a boob out undercover in public to a screaming baby, you will learn that you can still wear most of your regular clothes. As long as a boob is accessible, you're good to go.

3. Relax, Mama!

Here is the simple truth. Your milk will come in better if you relax. I know, I know... It is next to impossible to relax with a newborn. Just do your best to avoid stress in the beginning of breast feeding.

4. Just because you do or do not breast feed does not make you a good mom.

Let me make myself VERY clear right here. There is so much social/cultural pressure to breast feed these days. I agree, the health benefits/bonding benefits are incredible for mom and baby. But, there is so much pressure to breast feed that I feel like when women can't for some reason, they feel as if they have failed. LET ME MAKE MYSELF VERY CLEAR HERE: whether you breast feed for not- that does not determine if you are good mother! Things happen... milk doesn't come in sometimes, or maybe you have no choice but to work... or whatever the reason- sometimes breast feeding just doesn't happen. And that is okay. What makes a great mother is not breast milk. What makes a great mother is a woman who selfless loves her child(ren), nurtures them, cares for them, spends quality time with them, and instills character and values in them. Yes, breast feeding builds a bond between mother and child... but so does everything else you will be doing with your child. This is not to say women should just throw breast feeding to the wind- I do think you should at least give it a try... But if it doesn't work- don't beat yourself up over it! You are a wonderful mother who has given LIFE! You should be proud of yourself!

Anyway. I hope this offers some support and encouragement to those who are embarking on their own breast feeding journeys!

What is it about new beginnings that is so refreshing? 2012 is here, and I am ready to make some resolutions. I LOVE making lists and setting goals- ESPECIALLY when there is a clean slate ahead of me. Truthfully, I am a tad of an overachiever. I'm going to try and not stress myself out this year, and keep the New Years resolutions simple.

1. I want to write more (more blogging!).

2. I want to invest in having more community in my life. Friends are so important, and I want to make them more of a priority.

3. Start chasing dreams. It sounds cliche' and cheesy, but I truly mean it. I have a few dreams I have been putting on the back burner; using excuses like "Oh, life is just to busy right now." or "Maybe when my daughter is older." Truth be told- these are just excuses. There is no time like the present.

4. Document EVERYTHING. My little girl is growing up so fast. I don't want to forget anything. Therefore, I must document everything! ;)

5. Enjoy life to the fullest. Once again, it sounds cliche'. But, I truly want to embrace life to its fullest. I don't want to waste life being down in the dumps. Every day is an opportunity to enjoying Jesus' grace and love.

Hi, friends! I hope you all had a beautiful, wonderful Christmas! We just got back from celebrating Christmas with Kyle's side of the family. We had an amazing time! I love each and every one of my extended family members so much. I feel very blessed to have a married in to such a great family.

While on the plane ride up to the Northwest, I picked up the complimentary magazine at my seat. Inside was an article about that new book, "Dear Me, A Letter To My 16 Year Old Self." I haven't read the book, but I did read some snippets of it in the article. It was pretty interesting to read what people would write to themselves in hindsight. It got me thinking about what I would say to my 16 year old self.

Dear 16 Year Old Mandy,

Stay true to who you are; who God created you to be. Quit trying to be someone other than yourself. Don't try so hard to be accepted by "the cool kids." They really aren't that cool. Don't dress like everyone else; wear your own personality through your wardrobe. Those styles that you love now may not be in style yet (and I know people make fun of them)... but they will be in style a couple years from now. Wear them proudly. Buy a hair straightener (there will be a show called "sister wives" coming out one day, and you don't want your hair to remind people of that show). Eat healthy. Don't drink all that nasty diet soda- it's really bad for you. Stay out of the sun. Don't quit writing. Write until your hearts content, and then write some more. Someday people will actually read what you write. Invest more into your family; they will be your closest friends for life. Keep dreaming big. Don't allow misguided, angry people trample your heart. Those dreams you have will come true someday.

Don't bother with dating silly boys that know nothing about what it means to truly be a man, and truly love a woman. Someday you will meet the kindest, most compassionate, interesting, attractive man you have ever known... and he will fight for your heart. Until then- go see the world. Make room in your heart to fall madly in love- first with an incredible man, and second with an 7 pound 10 ounce baby. Make friends with people you wouldn't regularly hang out with. Don't waste time, but learn the art of being still. Learn to love like Jesus loves. Have so much grace and compassion for everyone you ever meet. SAVE MONEY. Buy stock in Apple.

Moments

I have only been a parent for a little over nine months now. But, from my short experience I feel like I have come to have a million little every day experiences everyday that shape me into the mom I am, and the mother I am becoming. And then there are those moments... Those moments that make time stand still, take your breathe away, and make your heart feel so much joy that it could very well burst.

My little family of three is very blessed to have wonderful family on both sides to spend the season with. Creating traditions is very important to Kyle and me, so we decided to have our own little Christmas with our daughter before all the festivities begin.

Last night was filled with little chubby fingers tearing through wrapping paper, squealing with delight at the sight of a purple stuffed elephant, and new songs composed on a little kitty play keyboard. I know it had nothing to do with what we bought my daughter for Christmas... But it was one of those moments. Time stood still for a little while as Kyle and I watched our little girl enjoy Christmas. I'm not going to lie... Kyle and I were a little misty eyed.

I love these moments. I love watching Lily's eyes light up in wonder. These are the moments I will treasure forever.

Single Moms and Working Moms

I am not a morning person, particularly before I have my coffee. But I wanted to write a quick response to my last blog post on stay at home moms. I need to briefly clarify the intent of my last blog.

I cannot tell you how many times I have said, and thought to myself since becoming a mother, "Man, I have a whole new level of respect for single moms." And I sincerely do. Single moms are true blue super heroes in my eyes. Seriously- my hat goes off to women who are raising kids on their own. That requires a ton of strength, character, and deserves recognition and praise. I have a ton of respect for these women

Also, women who either work at home, or outside of the home- my hat is off to you all, as well! I have so much respect for women who take it upon themselves to provide for their children. I know it is far from easy, and I applaud you for what you do. Bills have to be paid, and food has to go on the table- and for a lot of people that means mom has to work. That deserves recognition and praise as, well.

My last post was by no means meant to exclude the hardships of women who aren't stay at home moms. I completely agree that being a mother, regardless of if your job is staying at home and raising kids, or working outside of the home as well as raising kids- both jobs share their hardships and joys.

My last blog post was just to raise awareness that sometimes there can be a social stigma about women who choose to stay at home. The stigma can be that these women have thrown away their brains and careers to the wind.. that or they have nothing better to do than be a home maker. And I totally understand that sadly, there is a stigma either way- whether you stay at home or not.

We all make sacrifices when we have children. For some that means having to work long hours outside of her home. For some that means working long hours at home, while taking care of children simultaneously. For some it means standing in line at the grocery store, or looking at another bill, praying that you will have enough, living off one income.

Any woman who gives life, nurtures that little life, and loves that little life-- that woman deserves praise. Can we all agree that being a mother, whatever your 9-5 job is, requires all of yourself?

I ran into an old friend the other day. We exchanged pleasantries, and inquired about each others lives. After gushing over Lily's cuteness, my friend asks the inevitable question, "So, are you working, or are you just staying at home taking care of baby?" CRINGE. I know this particular friend meant absolutely no harm, so I have no hard feelings. But I cringe when people say things like that. Yes, I am a stay at home mom. But, no, I am not "JUST" staying at home. (Or maybe I am being uber sensitive and my friend didn't use the word, I just heard the word "just" because I have been a little sensitive about this issue lately.)

It seems like becoming a stay at home mom gets boiled down to "settling." Especially in the eyes of others, I feel like when I say I am a SAHM, I get the pat on the back, and "oh, that's nice." It especially irks me because I am uncomfortably aware of how I viewed stay at home moms before I became one myself. I viewed being a home maker as someone who either sold themselves out, or couldn't figure anything else to do with their life. HORRIBLE! I know... Feel free to start casting stones now.

Now, being a stay at home mom, I know that is anything but the case. Being a SAHM is one HECK of a hard job. You don't get breaks. You don't get days off. You can't take a "personal" or a "sick" day. I have had plenty of jobs in my day, and none have been as challenging as being a stay at home mom.

I catch myself giggling ~~and rolling my eyes~~ when I hear someone without children saying, "Oh, I am so tired." Or, rather my ALL time favorite, "Where has my social life gone?" (Social life? What is a social life?!) It takes everything within me not to be snarky and reply, "Honey, you don't even know what the word tired means until you have a baby."

But, then I have to remind myself that I too, was once was wearing the exact "shoes" that they are, and I should have a lot more grace for others than I do presently. (We are all a work in progress, right?)

Being a stay at home mom requires your entire being. There is not an ounce of yourself that you can claim as your own. Self sacrifice takes on a whole new meaning. My best friend, Jami and I were talking today about how becoming a mother makes you more "human." I remember the days when I wouldn't be caught dead without make up on. Seriously, I would get all dolled up JUST to go to the grocery store. I was consumed with how others viewed me. In short, I took myself a little to seriously. Becoming a mother has stripped me down to a very human level. The choices I make now, I question, "Do I want my daughter making this decision?" The way I live my life now will affect the decisions and choices she makes in her life. And I sure as heck pray that I am making wise ones.

Anyway, back to being a SAHM requiring your whole being... It really does. Choosing to give your life to another; to set aside your desires and wants to insure a little human is raised up in the way that he or she should go... it takes a lot of blood, sweat, and (many) tears. But, it also opens up a whole new side of yourself you have never seen.

Since being a mom, I have come to grips with my human-ness; I have stood face to face with my weakness and inadequacies, and laid them before my maker. I have learned in my weakness, HE is strong. I have found beauty deep within myself that I was unaware of before. I have laughed harder, and found even deeper joy in giving myself to another. I have fallen deeper in love, and felt love stronger than I have ever before. Being a mother defiently has its rewards.

So, my friends... next time you run into an old friend who is a stay at home mom, please stop what you are doing, hug that woman, and tell her how proud you are of her for doing her job well. Her job is sacred, and deserves a pat on the back, and some understanding of its difficulties from time to time. That woman is never "just." She is a woman who is giving all of herself. She is a woman who wears an invisible cape.

Santa and Pee Pee

Celebrating Christmas seems so much sweeter with little ones, doesn't it?

A couple days ago, we brought Lily to see Santa at the mall. This particular mall is pretty swanky and ritzy. All around us where perfectly dressed little boys and girls; all in their Christmas best, ready to sit on Santa's lap... Then there was us. My daughter had a Beatles onsie and leggings on... as well as sweet potato stains on her face and shirt.

Right before we were about to see Santa, I was holding Lily, taking pictures with my phone, and suddenly my arm gets really warm. I look down to see that she has promptly peed all over herself, and me. I am finding this pretty funny at this point. We had been standing in line to see Santa for an hour now. ~~A lot~~ A little pee wasn't going to stand in the way of my daughters first Santa experience (sorry Santa). Thankfully, I don't clean out my diaper bag frequently. Some quick thinking on Kyle and my part, and a change into a pair of prune stained baby pants, and a winter Zebra fur coat later-- we were ready for Santa.

Haha. I love these memories.
